Search engines can see this behavior and will punish you for it.  Trading links with other sites which share the same topic as yours is a great idea. For example, trading links with an athletic forum would be perfect for a company which sells sports socks. If you also sell baby socks, you could trade links with "mom blogs" or parenting groups.
